This was my first peek at Millerton, NY, a tiny perfectly preserved village in upstate New York on the Connecticut border. I was there to visit Harney and Sons Tea Company. I had been ordering online from them and loved their tea blends, but was yearning for a road trip and decided to go meet my tea supplier in person.
I parked and quickly found Harney and Sons……..
The first thing you see when you walk inside is the elegant display of tins of tea on a far wall….
The staff are very knowledgeable and happy to bring down tins for you to look at and smell. Everyone is offered one complimentary cup of tea.
So I made my selections and wandered into the gift shop. Great gift shop. So many fun tea cups and tea related gifts that were unusual and delightful.
They also have a small cafe in the back, where you can try more tea and have a small meal.
The whole experience at Harney and Sons was low-key, delightful, exploratory, and one that I’ll want to repeat.
The only problem was the cafe was closing down and I was very hungry. So I sauntered back out onto the street and looked up the hill. To the right I spied a pizza sign and made my way there. My instincts were impeccable. I went inside and found a seat at Taro’s. It was like walking into a movie, into a small neighborhood restaurant from the 1970′s where everyone knows everyone else’s name. I loved it immediately. Then, when the pizza came I swooned. Literally. It was spectacular, moist, and flavorful with a thin crisp crust. See?
Hoping for the best, I ordered dessert. Wow. One of the best cakes I have ever had arrived. Vanilla cake with a lemon cream filling. How could anything that simple be so good????
